Pediatric Ophthalmology Navigator Volunteer

Unit Description

As a volunteer, you will get the opportunity to directly assist physicians during their consultations, such as by using light-up toys to help physicians with their exams, keeping the children company as their parents ask questions, and more. You will also have the opportunity to view various tests when you escort patients and families to testing areas within the clinic. You will potentially help out with room cleaning, lens cleaning, and organizing materials. What exactly you will be doing depends on the physician you are assisting for the day, so there is a lot of variety involved in the position. Thirty hours of volunteer experience at UIHC is required to volunteer in the unit.

Uniform

The dress code for this unit is either a Volunteer Services polo, khaki pants, and closed-toe shoes or business casual attire in accordance with the professional appearance policy outlined in the Volunteer Handbook. Shirts are available for purchase at Wild Rose Gifts (Main Entrance Lobby) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Volunteers must follow the professional appearance policy, which includes wearing the volunteer badge at all times.

Hours Available

Our units have volunteers serve on Monday through Friday from 9 AM-5 PM. Three hours per week is expected from unit volunteers.

Areas of Study Best Suited

This unit is great for any major, whether it be health science-related, education, or open. Students interested in working with children in the future are encouraged to volunteer. Simply put, volunteers need only a strong desire to work with children and have fun.
