A painful or injured hand or wrist can affect every aspect of your life: work, play, expressing yourself, and so much more.

When hand or wrist problems make your day-to-day activities difficult, experienced University of Iowa Health Care experts in orthopedics can help.

From carpal tunnel syndrome and osteoarthritis pain to traumatic injuries, our team diagnoses and treats every type of hand and wrist condition.

They're experts in complex procedures like wrist replacement, hand reconstruction, and reattachment of severed fingers or hands.

They're also leaders in researching treatments and techniques that lead to better results. When you choose UI Health Care, you're getting the most up-to-date treatments available anywhere.

Our collaborative care team will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan. Their goal is to relieve your pain and restore and and wrist function so you can get back to living your life.

The latest diagnostic and treatment techniques

UI Health Care specialists use leading-edge tools and techniques to diagnose and treat hand and wrist conditions.

For example, our providers specialize in diagnostic ultrasound, which isn't widely available. This safe, painless imaging tool quickly pinpoints the cause of your pain and helps your team choose the best treatment.

Nonsurgical care

Many hand and wrist conditions can be treated successfully without surgery. Options available from UI Health Care include:

Physical and occupational therapy with our team of certified hand therapists.

Medication, such as pain relievers or steroid injections.

Assistive devices, including splints or braces.

Surgical expertise

If you need surgery, our board-certified surgeons have intensive training and years of experience in hand and wrist procedures.

Whenever possible, they use minimally invasive techniques. Performed through small incisions, these procedures result in less pain, faster recovery, and minimal scarring. They include:

  • Hand and wrist arthroscopy

  • Endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery

  • Ultrasound-guided procedures for Dupuytren's contracture, trigger finger, and other conditions

Sometimes joint replacement, fracture repair, or other procedures require traditional open surgery, using larger incisions. Our surgeons use the latest methods and materials to get you the best results.

Specialized physical therapy

Whether you're treated surgically or nonsurgically, physical and occupational therapy are likely to be part of your treatment plan.

UI Health Care's certified hand therapists are a key part of your care team.

They work closely with your other providers to make sure your customized therapy program gets you back to pain-free function as quickly as possible.

Whether physical therapy is your primary treatment, or you need rehabilitation after surgery, our therapists will help you heal.
